Returning to the league for a 16th season, Wallace appeared in 20 games for the Knicks this year. According to the team, he’s suffered what’s known as a “Jones Fracture” in his left foot, which will require surgery and an approximately eight-week recovery.
The Knicks aren’t removing Wallace from their roster, as Posting and Toasting, SB Nation’s Knicks blog, notes. Still, they say it’s highly unlikely that he’ll actually be able to return given his age and the lack of time remaining in the season.
While this is certainly disappointing news for the Knicks, at the age of 38, it’s time to wonder whether this is the end of the line for Wallace.
When Wallace retired following an up-and-down season with the Boston Celtics in 2010, most people assumed that would be the end of the line. He proved otherwise by coming back and being effective in his stint with New York this season, though it has ended in unfortunate circumstances.
It’s still possible that Wallace makes another comeback, particularly after he looked so shaky in his final days with Boston. However, three years is quite a long time when you’re talking about a basketball player nearing his 40th birthday, and few players are capable of contributing after so much wear and tear.
Is this the end of the line for Sheed? We don’t know yet, but we know it’s awfully close, and this is probably it.
