Dwight Howard injury: Lakers center not playing Sunday, according to report

Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard will not play against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday because of his lingering shoulder injury.

USA TODAY Sports

After re-injuring his torn labrum, Dwight Howard will miss his second game in a row on Sunday as his Los Angeles Lakers face the Detroit Pistons, according to the Los Angeles Times' Mike Bresnahan.

Howard missed a 111-100 victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday following the shoulder injury that occurred in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. He is listed as day-to-day for the injury, which is a re-aggravation of a torn labrum that occurred on Jan. 6.

The center flew to Detroit separately from the team after undergoing platelet-rich plasma therapy on the shoulder Saturday morning, according to ESPN Los Angeles.

In the win against the Timberwolves, forward Pau Gasol returned to Los Angeles' starting lineup as center alongside Earl Clark and Metta World Peace in the front court. He scored 22 points and three blocks to lead the Lakers and also tied with Kobe Bryant for a team-high 12 rebounds. The Lakers outrebounded Minnesota 57-40 without their starting center.

The Lakers will again play with a small-ball unit that played scrappy and inspired basketball against the Timberwolves.
