Carmelo Anthony evaluating options with knee injury

With Father Time doing little to heal what’s ailing Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks star is evaluating options for treating his ongoing knee issues.

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

As the knee issues plaguing New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony persist, all sides of the situation are considering the possibility of draining the player's knee as a last resort, Marc Berman of the New York Post writes.

While the severity of the injury has always been somewhat unclear, Melo has gone as far as saying he doesn’t believe he’ll ever be 100 percent again. So it’s clear that there’s growing concern with how his knee will react to heavy playing time in the coming weeks.

With the opportunity to play in Denver for the first time since he was traded more than two years ago, Anthony says he'll be on the court Wednesday night as the Knicks tip off against the Nuggets, but that's done little to dispel the consternation surrounding his status.

“The doctors will sit down and talk about it and see my options,” Anthony said after practicing with his teammates Wednesday morning at the Pepsi Center. “I think that’s the last option -- to get the knee drained. I have to weigh all the options -- how much time I’d have to take off.”

It’s unclear how serious the Knicks are about possibly draining Anthony’s balky knee, but the fact that it’s being considered is rather ominous for his status going forward.

In the past year, superstar players such as Dwyane Wade and Dirk Nowitzki have undergone knee draining procedures. Both players struggled to get their footing back afterwards, so Anthony will presumably do whatever is possible to avoid that fate.
