Clippers need to ‘figure out’ their problems against elite teams

After losing to the Grizzlies on Wednesday, L.A. has now gone 0-6 against the top teams in the West in the last two months.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

While the outcome of any one regular season game is meaningless, the outcome of six is enough for a meaningful trend to develop. After their 96-85 home loss to the Grizzlies on Wednesday, the Clippers are now 0-6 against the other elite teams in the Western Conference since mid-January.

Even more worrisome, most of those losses haven’t been particularly close. The Clippers have lost those games by an average of over 10 points, even though only two were away from the Staples Center.

"I don't know what it is," DeAndre Jordan told ESPN Los Angeles. "But we have to figure out soon what it is or it's going to be a quick postseason."

After being in the conversation for the No. 1 overall seed for most of the season, L.A. has now slipped all the way to the No. 4 seed. At 45-21, they are a 1/2 game behind Memphis and only 1 game ahead of Denver.

At one point in the season, the Clippers seemed poised to challenge for a berth in the Western Conference Finals. But if they fall behind the Nuggets and give Denver home-court advantage in a first-round series, their season could end far sooner than anyone expected.
