Pau Gasol may not return to Lakers on Monday after all

Lakers big man Pau Gasol was scheduled to return from a foot injury Monday night against Phoenix, but a setback over the weekend may scrap that plan.

USA TODAY Sports

The planned return of Los Angeles Lakers big man Pau Gasol for Monday night's game against the Phoenix Suns could be delayed by a setback in his recovery from foot issues, Mark Medina of the L.A. Daily News reports.

Gasol experienced additional pain in his right foot after participating in a two-on-two game Saturday, head coach Mike D’Antoni said, which is now putting his Monday night return in jeopardy. He went to see a specialist Sunday morning, but the details of that meeting aren’t known.

Considering that the Lakers don’t expect to have Gasol back Monday against the Phoenix, it’s safe to wonder if there’s at least some reason for concern.

If Gasol doesn’t return for the Phoenix game, he’ll have sat out 32 of the Lakers’ first 68 games this season. However, the team hasn’t missed his presence of late, winning 13 of the 19 games he’s missed with the current foot injury to re-enter the playoff picture.

Los Angeles would have welcomed his return Monday with Kobe Bryant still sidelined by an ankle injury, as Silver Screen and Roll, SB Nation's Lakers blog, reminds us that Antawn Jamison will likely need to come up big again for the Lakers to keep rolling.
