Amath M’Baye declaring for 2013 NBA Draft

Oklahoma junior big man Amath M’Baye will declare for the NBA Draft this year.

Oklahoma Sooners junior forward Amath M’Baye will declare himself eligible for the 2013 NBA Draft, Michael DeCourcy of The Sporting News reports. A 23-year-old big man, M’Baye stands 6’9 and weights 215 pounds.

A relatively unknown figure in NBA circles after transferring from Wyoming to Oklahoma this year, M’Baye was born in France before moving to the U.S. as a teenager After spending his first two years of NCAA eligibility playing for Wyoming, he sat out last season following his transfer to OU.

Playing in his first year with the Sooners, M’Baye helped power Oklahoma to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in three years. A relatively raw offensive player, he averaged 10.1 points per game on 46 percent shooting, with many of his points coming from electric dunks like these:

Given his unique circumstances as a foreign-born player who didn’t move to the U.S. until 2008 and then played his first two college years for a smaller program like Wyoming, M’Baye doesn’t have much hype at this point. However, one can see from the video above that he’s got some major athleticism paired with a legitimate NBA body.

In a draft that’s considered less-than-stellar, don’t be surprised if some teams seriously consider taking the big man as a possible project. Draft workouts could be a place where M’Baye really shines for teams, as SB Nation’s Jonathan Tjarks reminds us.

M’Baye is not ranked by Draft Express in its Top 100 Prospects list, but he is rated No. 36 on the site’s ranking of the best juniors in the nation.
