J.R. Smith on his coach: ‘He cusses me out, I cuss him out, we go from there’

The most heartwarming NBA love story of the year, starring J.R. Smith, Mike Woodson, and the New York Knicks.

As the Wall Street Journal’s Chris Herring put it Thursday morning, “In almost every way imaginable, Knicks guard J.R. Smith personifies the basketball term ‘chucker.’”

And it’s GLORIOUS.

But you know that. Wednesday we got another reminder.

J.R. was asked to describe his relationship with Mike Woodson, and he told Steve Popper, “We have a funny relationship, honestly. It’s crazy. Off the court it’s like father-son. On the court we bump heads sometimes. He cusses me out, I cuss him out and we just go from there. By the end of the timeout we’re on the same page. It’s fun. I love playing for him.”

... As if we needed more proof that J.R. Smith and Mike Woodson should be joined at the hip for the rest of their lives.

Plus, J.R.‘s been on fire lately, which is always fun. (Then again, it’s also fun when J.R. goes ice cold for weeks at a time and still manages to jack up 200 off-balance fadeaways every 48 minutes. Basically, there’s no downside to the J.R. Smith experience.)

In the past six games, he’s averaged 24.6 points on 52 percent shooting, and he’s been getting to the rim more often, which, as Herring notes, is the biggest reason he’s been so deadly lately. Meanwhile, the Knicks have won five straight.

Does this mean there’s been less of that #WhatTheHellYouDoingLook?

Almost certainly not.

But that’s why we love J.R. Smith.

And Mike Woodson.

And the Knicks.

“He cusses me out, I cuss him out and we just go from there.”
