Veteran point guard Aaron Brooks cleared waivers and became a free agent Monday, clearing the way for him to finalize a deal with the Houston Rockets, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports. Brooks had already been tied to Houston before clearing waivers.

The NBA's Most Improved Player for the 2009-10 season after averaging 19.8 points and 5.4 assists per game as Houston's point guard, Brooks struggled in a short stint with the Sacramento Kings this season. Beginning the season as a starter, Brooks ended it on the end of the bench, clearly dissatisfied with losing minutes to Isaiah Thomas.
Ever since his award-winning season three years ago, Brooks has struggled to maintain his footing in the NBA. A short stint with the Phoenix Suns at the end of the 2010-11 season ended with mixed results, and he sat out the entire lockout-shortened 2011-12 season.
It’s not a lock that he’ll return to Houston at this point, but it’s not surprising that the guard wants to head back to where he’s played his best basketball. The folks over at The Dream Shake, SB Nation’s Rockets blog, are behind the move, for it’s worth.
Update: Brooks has reached an agreement with the Rockets, according to reports. His deal will reportedly include a team option for next season.
