New Orleans Hornets rookie guard Austin Rivers suffered a broken bone (the fourth metacarpal) in his right hand during a game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night and is expected to miss four to six weeks of action, according to Hornets beat writer Jim Eichenhofer.

New Orleans Hornets rookie guard Austin Rivers injured his hand on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Lakers, and he is expected to miss four to six weeks of action.

Rivers has struggled throughout his rookie campaign after being selected No. 10 overall by the Hornets in the 2012 NBA Draft. The son of Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers is just 20 years old, and when taken in the draft he was considered a raw prospect with plenty of room for improvement. However, Rivers has struggled in nearly every facet of the game during his time in the NBA.
His 5.9 Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is among the worst marks in the league, and by converting on just 37.2 percent of his shots from the field he has posted a ghastly 43.1 percent True Shooting mark over 61 games. By all acounts, it has been one of the worst rookie campaigns in NBA history. It’s clear that Rivers will have plenty of work to do this off-season if he hopes to fulfill the potential he flashed as a freshman at Duke University.
The Hornets are not in contention for a playoff spot and their regular season schedule ends in six weeks, so it’s possible that Rivers will not see the court again this season.
