The Dallas Mavericks have waived third-year guard Dominique Jones, the 25th overall pick in the 2010 draft, the team announced Saturday morning.

Despite the strong pedigree, the news presumably isn’t too surprising to those following the team closely. Since the beginning of the new year, Jones has appeared in just five games, playing a total of less than 30 minutes as the Mavericks have tried to get back into postseason contention.

The Mavericks were reportedly ready to acquire Paul Pierce. Would that have been the right move? Acquired by Dallas in a draft day deal with the Memphis Grizzlies nearly three years ago, Jones never established himself with the Mavericks despite the lack of quality perimeter players on the roster. A big-time scorer in college at South Florida, he simply hasn't looked the part at any part in his pro career.
In 80 career games with the Mavs, Jones has averaged just 3.1 points per game on 37 percent shooting.
Though he’s shown some potential as a playmaker, dishing out nearly nine assists per 36 minutes this season, he’s also been prone to turnovers and his scoring ability simply hasn’t translated in any way. Beyond his inability to make long-range shots, he’s also a poor finisher at the rim despite good size (6’4) and athleticism.
Because he’s still just 24 years old with some pedigree and flashes of potential -- he’s had three games with 10-plus points and at least five assists this season -- someone will likely pick him up as a free agent. Jones will not be postseason eligible if he joins another team this season, however.
