The injury woes continue for Knicks big man Amar’e Stoudemire. He’ll be sidelined for the next six weeks after undergoing debridement surgery on his right knee.

Just the latest episode in a lengthy battle between Stoudemire and his knees, debridement is a surgical procedure not typically seen in sports medicine. When the Knicks star underwent the same procedure in October 2012, Seth Rosenthal of Posting and Toasting, SB Nation’s Knicks blog, explained:
Debridement, as far as I can tell, is a surgical procedure wherein they’ll root around Amar’e’s knee with an arthroscope, then take out a bunch of dead [stuff] that isn’t supposed to be there.
Not the most scientific description, but it doesn’t appear that there’s much easily accessed literature out there on the topic.
Considering that Stoudemire was already on a minutes limit before the injury, it will be interesting to see how the Knicks treat this injury entering the stretch run of the season. Even as Stoudemire has battled injuries this year, he’s been a highly efficient post scorer, but New York also needs to be cautious with his uninsured contract.
