Dion Waiters injury: Cavs rookie set to return vs. Pistons

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Dion Waiters will return from a knee injury in limited action on Wednesday.

USA TODAY Sports

Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters will see limited playing time on Wednesday against the Detroit Pistons after missing 10 games because of a knee injury, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Waiters is expected to play only 15 to 20 minutes in his return.

The rookie shooting guard hurt his knee during a March 18 game against the Indiana Pacers.

An MRI revealed that a loose piece of cartilage was causing knee discomfort, and the Cavaliers said at the time that Waiters might require knee surgery. After a week of resting the knee, the team opted against surgery as it continued to put the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft through rehab.

Waiters participated in a light practice on Monday, but coach Byron Scott didn’t put much stock in the guard returning Wednesday, the Akron Beacon Journal reported. However, the team listed him as probable heading into the game against the Pistons.

Averaging 14.7 points and three assists per game, the rookie out of Syracuse has played in 57 of the Cavs’ 77 games this year.

Wayne Ellington, who Cleveland acquired from Memphis in a mid-season trade, has most recently started in Waiters' place. He is averaging 11.6 points and 2.3 assists in his last 10 games.
