Doug Collins’ future with 76ers is up to him, agent says

Rumors are floating around in Philadelphia that the 76ers would be OK with Doug Collins walking at the end of this season, but Collins’ agent says that it’s completely up to the head coach.

USA TODAY Sports

Doug Collins' future as the Philadelphia 76ers coach is completely up to him, his agent said Thursday. John Langel told PhillyBurbs.com that the relationship between Collins and the team is "terrific," and he added that the sources of a Philadelphia Inquirer article that claimed Sixers management privately wanted him out was not started by the coach.

The Inquirer published a report that said multiple anonymous sources believed the 76ers privately hoped Collins would walk after this season, which would leave one year on the table of his contract worth approximately $4.5 million. Philadelphia picked up the option before the 2012-13 season.

The team will not extend Collins past next season if he decides to stay through his current deal, sources told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

No reports indicate that the team will fire Collins before the end of his deal.

Attempting to refute the Inquirer’s story, a source told CSB Philly that the team stands behind Collins -- at least, through the final year of the contract. The source said there have been no internal discussions about the 76ers replacing Collins.

Lending more evidence that the team stands behind their coach, Sixers CEO Adam Aron has repeatedly and recently been adamant that Collins’ future in Philadelphia reaches beyond the length of his contract. Aron told CSN Philly in March that he hoped Collins would be with the franchise for “years and years and years.”
