Nets, GM Billy King nearing contract extension, according to report

The Nets will retain their general manager who has rebuilt a successful Eastern Conference team during its first year in Brooklyn.

Billy King and the Brooklyn Nets are close to finalizing an agreement that will extend the current general manger's contract, reports Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. King's current deal with the Nets ends this summer, but he is expected to sign a multiyear extension in the very near future.

After joining the Nets in the summer of 2010, King has been one of the more prominent general managers in the league. He gave a struggling franchise hope when he pulled off a blockbuster trade that brought All-Star point guard Deron Williams to New Jersey from Utah. And through continued losing even with the addition of Williams, King managed to keep him on board, signing him this past offseason to a $98 million max contract.

That got the ball rolling for the Nets to pull off a trade for former Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson and the re-signing of talented center Brook Lopez, not to mention the fill-in additions of players like Gerald Wallace, C.J. Watson and Andray Blatche.

The result as the team moved to its new home in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn was a 49-win squad in the upper-half of the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

Brooklyn is currently tied with the Chicago Bulls, 1-1, in the first round of the playoffs.
