LeBron James knows that 2nd place sucks

After falling short of Marc Gasol in the Defensive Player of the Year voting, LeBron James feels Kevin Durant’s hatred of coming in second.

USA TODAY Sports

LeBron James got second place in the 2012-13 season's Defensive Player of the Year voting, falling short of winner Marc Gasol. And just as Kevin Durant this week complained about being second -- and thus came a Sports Illustrated cover -- James had some pointed words to describe what second place means to him.

Per the Palm Beach Post:

“It sucks,” James said. “It sucks. It sucks.”

Why would James come in second? No disrespect to Gasol, but no other player can guard both a point guard and a center.

Then again, James could arguably sweep most of the league’s yearly awards for which he is eligible -- he can’t win the Rookie of the Year award as a veteran, nor the Sixth Man award as a starter. James is the favorite for MVP, and he could even arguably be in consideration for being much improved. That stretch of insane shooting percentages was evidence that even the best of players can hone and improve their games.

So why not defensive player of the year?

“I don’t know,” James said. “It definitely sucks, though. Finishing second? Who wants to finish second?”

Got it. LeBron feels you, Kevin Durant. Second place just sucks.
