Russell Westbrook injury: Thunder star out for postseason after surgery

Thunder star Russell Westbrook will not make a miracle return to the playoffs after undergoing surgery on a torn meniscus.

Oklahoma City Thunder star point guard Russell Westbrook will miss the rest of the playoffs after undergoing surgery on a torn meniscus.

It was revealed Friday that Westbrook would require surgery, but there was still an outside shot that he would be able to return later in the postseason if the Thunder were able to advance far enough. However, that door has now been shut.

Westbrook suffered the injury in the Thunder's Game 2 victory over the Houston Rockets when Patrick Beverley lunged at him while he was running to the sideline to call a timeout. Beverley fell awkwardly into Westbrook's knee, although the Thunder star stayed in the game and finished with 29 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

The loss of Westbrook is a huge blow to the Thunder's title chances, as now much of the scoring pressure will be put on Kevin Durant. Second-year guard Reggie Jackson will replace Westbrook in the starting lineup.
