Stan Van Gundy, Kelvin Sampson are top targets for Bucks’ coaching search, according to report

Former Magic coach Stan Van Gundy and Rockets assistant Kelvin Sampson have emerged as top targets in the Bucks’ search for a new head coach.

The Milwaukee Bucks have identified Houston Rockets assistant Kelvin Sampson and former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy as top targets in their search for a new head coach, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports. Both are considered major candidates for head coaching gigs throughout the league this summer.

Having parted ways with interim coach Jim Boylan, the Bucks announced Wednesday they would immediately set out to find his replacement. As a longtime assistant under Skiles, Boylan always felt like a lame duck in Milwaukee barring unprecedented success.

That success obviously never came, as Milwaukee was just 22-28 under Boylan once he took over for Scott Skiles, who left the team in January after four-plus years on the job. Despite the struggles, the Bucks still reached the postseason, but a sweep at the hands of the Miami Heat in the first round brought the trip to an abrupt end.

These days, Sampson and Van Gundy are both considered prime candidates for head coaching gigs. The Charlotte Bobcats have already reached out to former, who is still coaching in the playoffs with Houston, while the latter has been tied to numerous gigs in reports.
