Phil Jackson advising Detroit Pistons on coaching search

The Detroit Pistons won’t oblige Phil Jackson’s desire to play a more active role in the NBA, but he will help the franchise find their next coach.

Phil Jackson won’t be the Detroit Pistons’ next coach, but he’ll help them pick one. The 68-year-old with 13 NBA titles to his name will join the team in an advisory role as they search for a replacement for Lawrence Frank.

Jackson desires a return to the NBA next season, most likely in a behind-the-scenes role. This isn’t that - he’ll simply be helping out as they look for the guy who will be the team’s next coach. A team press release indicates that Jackson knows team owner Tom Gores personally, and agreed to help due to their relationship. On the other hand, it also specifies that Jackson will not be filling a more concrete role with the franchise going forward.

The front-runner in Joe Dumars’ search so far is former Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, with other possibilities including Suns interim coach Lindsay Hunter, Pacers assistant Brian Shaw and Heat assistant David Fizdale. SB Nation’s Detroit Bad Boys has had complete coverage of the Pistons’ coaching search and all the available candidates.
