Raptors to interview Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri, according to report

A bidding war is developing between the Nuggets and Raptors for general manager Masai Ujiri, as Toronto has reportedly received permission to interview Denver’s GM.

Denver Nuggets general manager and 2013 NBA Executive of the Year Masai Ujiri is one of the lowest-paid general managers in the league, but that's all about to change, one way or another. The Toronto Raptors have received permission to interview Ujiri, who is in the final year of his deal with the Nuggets, and they will present him with a multi-year offer worth nearly $3 million annually, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The stakes are high for Denver. If the Nuggets fail to present a “market-value” contract extension, Ujiri is reportedly prepared to walk away and take the job in Toronto. The Raptors will meet with the man who formerly served as their assistant GM sometime before Saturday night. That doesn’t leave much time for Denver to prepare a potent offer.

Ujiri worked in the Raptors' front office for three years under Bryan Colangelo, who was recently shifted away from basketball operations into an executive role. Ujiri was hired by the Nuggets in 2010 and proceeded to build one of the top teams in the Western Conference after trading away Carmelo Anthony. Now the Nuggets will be forced to enter a bidding war if they hope to keep their top executive in the fold. Contracts for front office members and coaches do not count against the salary cap, so it all comes down to which owner will be willing to spend the most money to lure in one of the top executives in the NBA.

The Raptors have also requested to interview Pacers GM Kevin Pritchard, who they may be seeking to pair with Oklahoma City Thunder assistant GM Troy Weaver, but Toronto will have to wait until Indiana's season is over to have that discussion.
