Phoenix Suns officially announce hiring of Jeff Hornacek as new coach

Hornacek, a Jazz assistant for the last three seasons, is the first big hire for new Phoenix GM Ryan McDonough.

The Phoenix Suns made it official on Tuesday, announcing the hire of Jeff Hornacek to be their new head coach.

Hornacek, a former All-Star with the Suns who had a 15-year playing career in the NBA, still lives in the Phoenix area. He spent the last three years working as an assistant for the Utah Jazz.

Bright Side of the Sun: A roundtable on the Hornacek hire

In an interview with Suns.com, new GM Ryan McDonough cited Hornacek’s mind for the game, as well as his ability to develop young players, as two of the biggest reasons for the hire:

The primary reason we hired Jeff is because we think he is an exceptional basketball mind, who had a terrific playing career, a very good assistant coaching career, and we just felt like he was at the right age and right experience to take that next step to be a head coach.

With a new management team now in place, Phoenix is set to begin what will likely be a very long rebuilding process.

The Suns have the No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft, which will be their first chance to upgrade a shallow talent base.
