Hawks coaching search: Mike Budenholzer reportedly in ‘serious talks’ with Atlanta

Former San Antonio Spurs player and current Atlanta general manager Danny Ferry is in negotiations with San Antonio assistant Mike Budenholzer to become the Hawks’ next coach.

The San Antonio Spurs have given assistant coach Mike Budenholzer permission to speak with the Atlanta Hawks regarding their head coaching opening and the two parties are in "serious talks," according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

Hawks general manager Danny Ferry is familiar with the Spurs assistant from Ferry’s playing days with the Spurs. Ferry played for San Antonio from 2000-2003 and after his NBA career ended, he joined the front office staff.

Budenholzer gaining permission from the Spurs gives him the opportunity to discuss a deal in the nine days the team has off between their Western Conference Finals sweep of the Memphis Grizzlies and the start of the NBA Finals. The finals series begins June 6.

Budenholzer has been with San Antonio for the last 18 seasons and has been head coach Gregg Popovich's top assistant for the last five.

Atlanta still has coach Larry Drew under contract, but he has been looking for other opportunities without a contract extension coming his way. Drew will interview with the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday and NBA.com's David Aldridge reports he is a finalist for that opening.
