Lionel Hollins doesn’t think Grizzlies will allow him to speak to other teams

The Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets are among teams reportedly interested in Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, but will he even receive the opportunity to speak with them?

USA TODAY Sports

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins doesn't think the Grizzlies will allow him to speak with other franchises about their head coaching opportunities, according to The Commercial Appeal's Peter Edmiston.

As reported by Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears on Monday, it's expected that the Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks are interested in speaking with the Grizzlies coach.

Hollins' contract with the Grizzlies ends on June 30, and the uncertainty regarding his status has hung over Memphis throughout this year. The team and Hollins tabled discussions about a contract extension before the Grizzlies went on a run to the Western Conference Finals, where they were swept by the San Antonio Spurs.

Teams must request permission from other franchises if they wish to speak with coaches under contract.

Hollins told the Memphis Flyer's Chris Herrington he will look at his options after June 30 if a deal can't be worked out with the Grizzlies. He has maintained that he'd like to remain with the Grizzlies, but it's unclear whether the franchise will offer a contract to their head coach. Spears reported that Hollins will meet with Grizzlies chief executive officer Jason Levien this week to discuss his future.

The Grizzlies' record under Hollins has improved in each season since he took over with the peak of their success coming this year despite the often-criticized trade of swingman Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors.

Hollins has a 214-201 regular-season record with the Grizzlies.
