Doc Rivers undecided on return as Celtics coach

Doc Rivers’ tenure as Boston’s head coach sounds like it will continue — but the coach said repeatedly that he hasn’t made a decision yet.

After an emotional loss to the New York Knicks on Friday night -- one that could have featured Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in Celtics green for the last time -- Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers was asked about his own future. He gave two answers: "I don't know" and, "If you asked me right now, I'm leaning toward coming back."

The former was Rivers’ first answer, and refrain, when asked about his offseason plans. He told reporters he would need to take at least a week to decompress and get away from the game. “I immerse myself, almost to a fault. I don’t even know what you do. Sit and watch cartoons or something,” Rivers said. Then, when asked directly about whether he would coach the Celtics next year: “I don’t know. I don’t know that right now. I can’t make that decision right now.”

But when pressed on the topic, Rivers relented a little. “I’m not leaning that way,” he said, meaning that he isn’t thinking he’s leaving. “If I told you right now, I’m coming back.”

Rivers has been the Celtics' head coach since 2004, and has led Boston to six straight playoff appearances since the 2007 arrival of Garnett and Ray Allen to form one of the NBA's most formidable trios with Pierce. The Celtics' first-round exit is their first since 2004-05, Rivers' first season as head coach.
