Nuggets’ George Karl named 2013 NBA Coach of the Year

Nuggets head coach George Karl has earned 2013 NBA Coach of the Year honors after leading Denver to 57 wins.

Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl has been named the 2013 NBA Coach of the Year after leading the Nuggets to 57 wins and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.

The Nuggets finished with the fourth-best record in the NBA this season despite having the league’s third-youngest roster. Denver was the league’s highest scoring team, and they also went a league-best 38-3 at home. That mark at the Pepsi Center was the best in franchise history and 14th-best in NBA history.

The Nuggets' season did end on a disappointing note when they lost to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs. Denver struggled to defend the Warriors' hot shooting and missed the presence of Danilo Gallinari, who went down with a torn ACL in April.

Karl earned 62 first-place votes and 404 points overall. Rounding out the top five in voting were Miami's Erik Spoelstra, New York's Mike Woodson, San Antonio's Gregg Popovich and Indiana's Frank Vogel.
