Former NBA center Mehmet Okur is lending support to anti-government protests back in his home country of Turkey by supporting a rally in Los Angeles and taking the message to Twitter.

Turkish protesters and riot police clashed in Istanbul’s Gezi Park over the past couple of days as the government moved to shut down the dissent over proposed plans by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan to redevelop the historic park in Istanbul’s Taksim Square.
The violence has led to protests expanding throughout Turkey and around the world in support of the protesters in Istanbul. This includes a group in Los Angeles where Okur joined to lend his voice to the cause.

Okur retired from the NBA last season after playing in just 17 games for the then-New Jersey Nets.
