Sacramento faces 2017 Kings arena deadline from NBA

The league and the Kings agreed to a deadline to ensure Sacramento completes plans to build a new arena as outlined in their efforts to keep the team from moving to Seattle.

Vivek Ranadive and his partners saved the Sacramento Kings from moving to Seattle, but now the real work begins to follow through on their commitments with the NBA to secure the team's long-term future in California's capital city.

Shortly after the new owners closed on their purchase of the Kings from the Maloof family, the NBA revealed a vital deadline for completing a new arena in Sacramento, according to the Sacramento Bee. NBA commissioner David Stern expects the team to meet a series of deadlines, which includes completion of the new arena at the planned Downtown Plaza location by 2017 or risk losing the team to another city.

The NBA and Ranadive signed a separate agreement regarding the league-imposed deadlines in order to appease concerns from some owners about the new ownership group and Sacramento following through with their plans. The deadline seems reasonable since the arena plan explained to the league had a projected completion date in 2016.

But when it comes to new arenas, the NBA doesn’t fool around and continues to use the threat of relocation, even as they are in the midst of congratulating a new ownership group on saving the franchise for Sacramento.
