Rick Adelman expected to return as coach of the Timberwolves

New Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Flip Saunders said that he expects the team to have its head coach back next season.

USA TODAY Sports

Every indication points to Minnesota Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman returning to the team next season, newly-appointed president Flip Saunders told NBA.com. Saunders said that he speaks to the head coach on a near-daily basis and there hasn't been talk of the head coach walking away to spend time with his wife, who suffered from an illness that had Adelman on the verge of stepping down from his post this past season.

“He talks about his staff, he talks about players,” Saunders told NBA.com at the adidas Eurocamp, where he was scouting for the Timberwolves. “We were talking the other day about offenses that I ran, offenses that he ran. Talking just the basketball talk. The talks that we’ve had leads me to believe that he’s going to be back.”

Adelman’s wife, Mary Kay, is doing better and Saunders added that means the T-Wolves’ coach will be able to focus on basketball. Based on their current discussions, that apparently is the case.

Though Minnesota went 31-51 during the 2012-13 season, it was hardly Adelman’s fault. He missed several weeks in the heart of the season to spent time with his wife, and the T-Wolves stumbled in his absence.

But it didn't help that the team dealt with several backbreaking injuries over the course of the season. All-Star forward Kevin Love missed most of the year with separate breaks in his hand, risky offseason signee Brandon Roy didn't pan out as his knees continued to be problematic and point guard Ricky Rubio took a while to get back on track following an ACL tear last season.
