Grizzlies to interview Alvin Gentry for head coach opening

Alvin Gentry has been talked about in connection to the Grizzlies and Clippers openings just a few months after the Suns opted to replace him.

Alvin Gentry will reportedly interview with the Memphis Grizzlies, as Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports reports that the coach most recently with the Phoenix Suns will meet with Memphis brass in Washington D.C. Friday.

Gentry was fired by the Phoenix Suns -- well, they mutually parted ways -- in January, after his squad lost 13 of 15 games. They had been 13-25 when he left the squad, but were an even worse 12-29 under Lindsay Hunter. He’s rarely had much chance to figure things out with teams: although he’s coached in parts of 12 NBA seasons with four teams, he’s only managed to be in charge of a squad for a full season four times, taking over three times in the middle of the season, being replaced three times in the middle of the season, and coaching through two lockouts. His teams have only ended up in the playoffs twice, and only finished over .500 in a full season once.

He’s also supposedly a candidate for the open Clippers job, which would be his second stint with the team.

Spears also named George Karl and Bulls assistant Dave Pickney as potential candidates to replace Lionel Hollins. But it seems Grizzlies assistant Dave Joerger -- the assistant primarily responsible for building the Grizzlies defense over the past few seasons -- seems to remain the front-runner, as the Grizzlies are reportedly quite interested in promoting him rather than bringing in an outsider.
