Dwyane Wade injury: Heat star won’t need knee surgery

Dwyane Wade’s right knee had a bunch of bruises and his left knee swelled up “like a coconut” during the playoffs, but neither injury will need surgery -- just rest.

Dwyane Wade's knee flared up during the 2013 NBA Playoffs, but it won't need any sort of procedure. Wade told Chris Tomasson his knee needs rest, though -- something he'll finally have time for after winning his third NBA Championship.

Wade didn’t look himself in the postseason as he dealt with a right knee injury that was obviously seriously bothering him. The longtime star averaged just 21.2 points in the regular season -- already a far cry from the 30.2 points he averaged while taking the NBA’s scoring title in 2009 -- and then managed a paltry 15.9 points during the playoffs.

Wade used to be dynamic with the ball in his hands, but he looked unsure and incapable of managing his second gear on offense while also looking like he wasn’t himself defensively, either.

A collision in Game 6 of the NBA Finals caused Wade's left knee to swell wildly, requiring him to get the knee drained and receive eight hours of therapy before last week's decisive Game 7. Many thought he'd need surgery during the offseason, but the request for him to rest is a much better diagnosis for those hoping he can come back to full strength.

Wade’s injuries on the right knee turned out to be a series of bone bruises, rather than more serious structural damage.

The former All-Star had surgery on his left knee -- the one that swelled up before Game 7 -- during the 2007 season and after winning the 2012 championship.
