Kings GM search: Larry Bird, Chris Mullin and Mike Dunleavy among candidates

Chris Wallace reportedly leads the Sacramento Kings’ search for a new general manager, but there are others in the mix.

The search for a new Sacramento Kings general manager is wide open, and the list of candidates is only growing, according to CBS Sports' Ken Berger.

Though Memphis Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace has been called the leading candidate by ESPN's Marc Stein, Berger reports the list has grown to also include Larry Bird, Chris Mullin, Travis Schlenk and Mike Dunleavy. Wallace, Schlenk and Dunleavy have already interviewed for the job, while the Kings and new owner Vivek Ranadive have reached out to Bird and Mullin.

Sources tell Berger that there are some concerned views from within the Kings about the franchise bringing on so many former employees of the Golden State Warriors.

Sacramento was formally introducing former Warriors assistant coach and new Kings head coach Mike Malone on Monday. Schlenk is currently the assistant general manager of the Warriors, and Ranadive is a former minority owner of Golden State. Mullin played for the Warriors but is friends with Kings minority investor Mitch Richmond.

Additionally, there is a belief that some in the Kings ownership group don’t think filling both the vital positions of head coach and general manager with inexperienced candidates is a good way to start since the team was sold by the Maloof family.

The Kings' new ownership made a point to move in a new direction since the sale of the team. They quickly initiated a search to replace former coach Keith Smart and general manager Geoff Petrie.
