NBA free agency rumors: Antawn Jamison and Wizards have mutual interest

Aging forward Antawn Jamison could return to his former team after short stints in Cleveland and Los Angeles.

USA TODAY Sports

Free agent Antawn Jamison and the Washington Wizards have a shared interest in joining forces once again, according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc. J. Spears. Jamison played for the Wizards from 2004-10 before being dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Last season, Jamison played in 76 games for the Los Angeles Lakers and averaged 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. It was the first time since the 15-year pro's rookie year that he averaged fewer than double digits.

Jamison's best years were spent in Washington as he established himself as a consistent 20-points-per-game scorer. A return to Washington would be beneficial perhaps from a locker room standpoint more than an on-court one. Jamison could act as mentor to 2013 third overall draft pick Otto Porter, but it's questionable whether his lack of a defensive presence and overall age could make him a liability more than a weapon.

It’s unclear what length of salary the 37-year-old will receive if he signs with the Wizards, but it’s likely it will be for a veteran’s minimum or less. Jamison made $854,000 with the Lakers in 2012-13.

The Washington Post's Michael Lee confirmed the mutual interest between the Wizards and Jamison, but added that the team is currently focused on re-signing free agent swingman Martell Webster.
