NBA free agency rumors: C.J. Watson nears agreement with Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers are close to finalizing a contract with a savvy backup point guard.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

The Indiana Pacers needed a backup point guard with D.J. Augustin becoming an unrestricted free agent, and it didn't take long for them to find a replacement. HoopsWorld's Alex Kennedy reports Brooklyn Nets backup point guard C.J. Watson is close to finalizing an agreement with the Pacers.

Kennedy added that the contract is a two-year deal worth more than the league minimum.

Watson has made a name for himself the past two years, first with the Chicago Bulls and then with the Nets. He averaged 6.8 points and 2.0 assists per game in 2012-13 but was an energetic defender off the bench and a reliable floor general with a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also was a capable spotup three-point shooter who hit 41 percent of his attempts from deep.

Indiana at times struggled last season when starting point guard George Hill was on the bench. Augustin shot well below 40 percent from the field and only averaged 16.1 minutes per game, a sign that Pacers coach Frank Vogel leaned heavily on Hill simply from a minutes perspective.
