After a ho-hum Las Vegas Summer League debut on Friday, Charlotte Bobcats rookie Cody Zeller showed why the Bobcats drafted him No. 4 overall with a sterling performance on Sunday. Zeller had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bobcats to an 86-80 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
NBA Summer League 2013: Cody Zeller leads Bobcats past Mavericks
No. 4 overall pick Cody Zeller dominated down low as the Bobcats held off the Mavericks at the Las Vegas Summer League on Sunday. The Indiana product had 21 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
Zeller flourished from the get-go against a rather thin Mavs frontline that included the big man’s teammate at Indiana, Christian Watford. Zeller had 13 of his 21 points in the first half as Charlotte roared out to a 50-28 halftime lead.
Zeller finished the night shooting 6-of-12 from the field, but perhaps most impressive was the fact that he went 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. He also had one assist, one block and just two turnovers in nearly 33 minutes of action.
About the only real negative of Zeller's performance was that he had several shots blocked at the rim, which was an issue at times in college against good frontcourts. This weakness was really visible in Indiana's 2013 NCAA Tournament loss to Syracuse in the Sweet 16. However, Zeller's general aggressiveness and ability to get to the line on numerous occasions made up for the few rejections.
After two games in Las Vegas, Zeller is now averaging 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 47.6 percent from the field.
