NBA free agency: Elton Brand agrees to sign with Hawks

Brand will provide depth behind Al Horford and Paul Millsap in the Atlanta frontcourt.

Veteran big man Elton Brand will sign a one-year contract worth $4 million with the Atlanta Hawks, according to a report from HoopsHype. Brand will back up All-Star C Al Horford and fellow free agent signing Paul Millsap in Atlanta.

Last season, Brand averaged 7.2 points and 6.0 rebounds a game with the Dallas Mavericks. He played in 72 games and started 18, but didn't fit well in the Mavs' offense. He had a career-low 6.6 shot attempts per game, well below his previous low of 9.7 the season before.

The 14-year NBA veteran was reportedly also weighing offers from the Knicks and the Mavericks. The Hawks will be his fifth NBA team, following stints with Dallas, Philadelphia, the LA Clippers and Chicago.

Atlanta was looking for more depth up front after losing Josh Smith in free agency and coming up short in the Dwight Howard sweepstakes. Reserve forward Ivan Johnson did not receive a qualifying offer from Atlanta, although that doesn't mean the team can't still bring him back.
