Bobcats await owners’ approval on switch to ‘Charlotte Hornets’

The Charlotte Bobcats have requested to change their name to the Hornets, and the NBA owners are reportedly ready to approve the retro revision.

USA TODAY Sports

Now that the NBA franchise in New Orleans has changed its name from the Hornets to the Pelicans, Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan is waiting on approval to re-brand the team as the Charlotte Hornets. Support from the NBA Board of Governors is expected to come on Thursday, after a meeting in Las Vegas. The name change requires approval from a majority of NBA owners, but it's clear at this point that there will be no resistance to the switch, according to a report by Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer. Charlotte is waiting on a rubber stamp at this point, and the franchise will apparently be celebrating the name change at an upcoming event in the city.

The Hornets played in Charlotte from 1988-2002, and when New Orleans made a change the Bring Back the Buzz movement started in Charlotte. The Bobcats name is already outdated, as it was created by expansion owner Robert Johnson, who sold his shares in the franchise to Jordan in February of 2010. NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver has been very supportive of the change.

If you've been holding on to a retro jersey of Alonzo Mourning, Muggsy Bogues, Larry Johnson, Jamal Mashburn or Baron Davis, it's time to break it out and celebrate!
