Celtics sign Phil Pressey

The Boston Celtics were impressed enough by Phil Pressey's performance in Summer League to sign the undrafted free agent, one of the top players not selected in the 2013 draft class.

Pressey, a 5'11 guard from Missouri, averaged 9.4 points and 6.6 assists for the C's in the Orlando Summer League. Along with the signing of Vitor Faverani, also announced Monday, they have 16 players under contract. Pressey could push for minutes behind Rajon Rondo at point guard, especially since Courtney Lee, MarShon Brooks, and Jordan Crawford all make more sense as combo guards than pure points.

Pressey, son of two-time NBA defensive first-teamer Paul Pressey, was first-team all-SEC this past season, but made the somewhat questionable decision to leave college after three years and head to the pros. It's not a lack of talent -- he's lightning quick, and averaged 11.9 points and 7.1 assists for the Tigers, eighth in all of college basketball -- but he struggled with consistency and decision-making.

There were 20-point games and double-digit assist outings, but there were also games like the one where he was 1 for 7 from the field with 10 turnovers against Florida, or his 16-shot, 13-point outing in the SEC tournament against Ole Miss. All told, he averaged 3.5 turnovers and shot just 37.6 percent from the field, and he made his final questionable decision by ditching college a year too early.
