The Denver Nuggets have reached an agreement with restricted free agent center Timofey Mozgov on a three-year, $14 million contract extension that includes a team option for the third year, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. The 27-year-old big man had been a target of sign-and-trade talks earlier in the summer, but Denver traded Kosta Koufos on draft night, and now Mozgov will presumably be the backup center behind JaVale McGee.

Mozgov struggled to carve out a role for himself in a crowded Nuggets frontcourt last season with George Karl, but he will have a new opportunity to prove his worth under head coach Brian Shaw. Denver added J.J. Hickson via free agency and traded for Darrell Arthur this offseason, so Mozgov will still have to earn his minutes. He averaged 2.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in 41 games for the team last season.
The price tag for a relatively unproven big man like Mozgov feels a bit high, but at this point it’s just another confusing turn in a directionless offseason for the Nuggets.
