Mavericks re-sign Bernard James

The Dallas Mavericks have re-signed center Bernard James, the team announced on Friday. The Mavericks were forced to waive James last Friday to create enough cap space to sign Monta Ellis to his new contract. James cleared waivers, and then the Mavericks snatched him on what is assumed to be a one-year contract for the veteran's minimum of $788, 872. The terms of the deal were not announced by the team.

The Mavericks allowed Elton Brand and Chris Kaman to leave via free agency this offseason, but the team re-signed Brandan Wright to a two-year, $10 million pact and inked a two-year contract with Samuel Dalembert. James will have a fresh opportunity to crack the rotation as a backup center in 2013-14. James played in 46 games for Dallas last season and averaged 2.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in 9.9 minutes per contest. The 28-year-old big man entered the NBA last season after spending time in the Air Force as a staff sergeant who served six years, including tours to Afghanistan, Iraq and Qatar.
