Lucas Nogueira likely to play overseas after Hawks sign Gustavo Ayon

The Atlanta Hawks picked up forward Gustavo Ayon on waivers and now have a frontcourt deep enough to allow their first-round pick to develop overseas.

With little more than a weight-training regimen on his plate next season, Atlanta Hawks first-round draft pick Lucas Nogueira will "most likely" return to Spain to develop with more playing time, reports The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Chris Vivlamore.

Vivlamore reports that the Hawks' waiver pickup of forward Gustavo Ayon made it an easy choice to allow Nogueira to return to Spain. The addition makes it hard to see Nogueira finding playing time next season. Atlanta added free agent power forward Paul Millsap to go with All-Star center Al Horford, and the team also added free agents Elton Brand and Pero Antic before grabbing Ayon, who was waived from the Milwaukee Bucks.

Nogueira has maintained he’d be fine staying in the United States and said it would give him the best opportunity to build upon his thin 7’0 frame.

In the Las Vegas Summer League, the Brazilian big man displayed flashes of his potential and averaged 6.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in 21 minutes per game.
