Derek Fisher's term as president expired this summer, and it's reportedly unlikely the veteran guard would retain the position because he is near the end of his career and facing a lawsuit from Billy Hunter, the union's former executive director.
Whitlock’s source said that while it is “unlikely” that James would seek the NBAPA presidency, he has been vocal during meeting’s about the union’s need for change.
“LeBron doesn’t do anything halfway and he has serious concerns about whether he has the time he knows the job requires,” the source said.
If James were to become president, it would be the first time a superstar has held the position in his prime since Isiah Thomas in the late 1980s. Patrick Ewing was also president, but he served at the end of his career from 1997 to 2001.
Union vice president Jerry Stackhouse has been the acting leader so far this offseason. Whitlock says the new president could be decided as early as late August when the union holds its annual summer meetings.
