The Memphis Grizzlies and the Boston Celtics completed a trade on Thursday that sent Fab Melo and cash considerations to Memphis and Donte Greene to Boston, the Celtics announced. Greene, though, is likely to be waived.

The Boston Celtics shed themselves of young big man Fab Melo and could use the move to get below the luxury tax line.

By waiving Greene and his $1 million non-guaranteed contract after shedding Melo’s $1.3 million deal, the Celtics could find themselves just under the luxury tax threshold of $71.75 million. Melo, a 23-year-old out of Syracuse, averaged just 1.2 points and 0.3 blocks per game in limited minutes with the Celtics after being drafted 22nd overall in 2012.
Melo spent a good deal of time in the D-League, where he displayed his shot-blocking abilities and set a league record with 14 blocks in a single game. Yet, his immaturity seemed to hold him back and was symbolically represented when Melo concussed himself by running into a door in January.
In Memphis, Melo will join a deep frontcourt that includes centers Marc Gasol and recently acquired Kosta Koufos.
Greene, also a former first-round pick from Syracuse, averaged 5.4 points and 2.5 rebounds in the 2011-12 season with the Sacramento Kings. He signed with Memphis during the middle of last year but didn't see the court.
The Celtics can waive Greene now or after training camp.
