Marcin Gortat injury: Suns center will rejoin Poland after foot tests

The Polish national team will have Marcin Gortat available for an exhibition game on Sunday after he returned to the United States for tests on his recovering foot.

USA TODAY Sports

Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat left his Polish national team for the United States two weeks ago to undergo tests on his recovering foot, but he's planning to return to Belgium by Sunday, where Poland will play an exhibition game, according to FIBA.com.

There were no specifics regarding the status of the tests on Gortat’s foot, but his return is good news even though he was expected to rejoin Poland all along. Gortat sprained his midfoot on March 6 and missed the rest of the NBA season. Though he played with Poland in July, Gortat told Eurobasket2013.org that he was still experiencing pain in the foot.

Bright Side of the Sun: More on the Suns

Poland plays Belgium, Israel and Italy in its next exhibition series. Gortat’s team will also play exhibition games in Lublin against Great Britain, Ukraine and Sweden from Aug. 22-25. At the FIBA tournament, Poland is in a tough Group C with Spain, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Georgia.

Gortat averaged 11.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game last season. With Phoenix's drafting of center Alex Len, there's an expectation that Gortat could be on the trading block with an expiring contract worth $7 million, but general manager Ryan McDonough said Gortat was very much a part of the 2013-14 Suns.
