NBA analysis is getting a huge boon for the upcoming season.

The SportVU cameras will be located in each of the league's 29 arenas -- remember, the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers share the Staples Center -- and track the movement of the ball, each player and even each official as it records data several times per second.
A minority of the NBA’s 30 teams have used the cameras since the 2011-12 season, but the $100,000 cost prevented other teams from subscribing and mining the immense amount of data.
Lowe wrote in March about how the Toronto Raptors use the cameras, describing how team’s can connect the gathered data to provide previously unseen analysis on how the game operates, much like PITCHF/X revolutionized analysis in baseball (unlike PITCHF/X, however, it’s unclear raw SportVU data will be available to the public).
The deal between the NBA and STATS LLC is expected to be announced next week.
