FIBA Africa results 2013: Nigeria, Tunisia finish group play undefeated

Group play wrapped up at the FIBA Africa Championship Sunday, as seedings were set in stone for the upcoming knockout stage of the 16-team tournament.

Morocco 84, Burkina Faso 63: Abdelhakim Zouita scored 21 points for the second game in a row for Morocco, which rolled easily over Burkina Faso, 84-63. Zouita was 5-of-7 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and he also hit 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Burkina Faso ended group play winless, but it stuck around with Morocco into the second quarter. Burkina Faso led 18-15 with about eight minutes left in the second quarter, but a 16-0 run put Morocco on top for good.

Republic of Congo 87, Mali 77: Giovan Oniangue’s 31 points were the most of any player in group play, and he was one of three players for Congo to finish with double figures Sunday in a 10-point win over Mali. Oniangue was 7-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-11 from deep. He also had seven rebounds and four assists.

With the win, Congo clinched Group D’s No. 3 seed, thus avoiding a round-of-16 matchup against Group C winner Angola. Mali held a 37-34 halftime lead when Namory Boundy hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer. But Congo quickly created a two-possession separation early in the third quarter, and a Jean-Felix Moupegnou three with one second left in the third pushed the lead out to eight points, its largest lead of the game to that point.

Tunisia 83, Rwanda 81 (overtime): Salah Mejri scored underneath the basket with 27 seconds to play, and Tunisia escaped with an 83-81 overtime win over Rwanda to finish group play 3-0. Tunisia would have won Group B even if Rwanda had won Sunday, but instead it was one of three teams to finish group play undefeated.

Tunisia went the final three minutes of regulation without a field goal, but Macram Ben Romdhane’s layup with four seconds left tied the game at 74 to send it to overtime. Ben Romdhane led Tunisia with 18 points.

Kenneth Gasana had 22 points for Rwanda, which shot 39 percent from the field.

The game was tight throughout, and Cameroon took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter. Both teams traded blows in the final frame, and with 1:03 left, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute knotted the score at 84-84. After Diogu knocked down the two free throws, Mbah a Moute was called for an offensive foul and Diogu helped seal the deal with another bucket.

Mbah a Moute had 19 points for Cameroon, who took the second seed in Group D with the loss. Christian Bayang led Cameroon with 20 points.
