Cavaliers expected to be cautious with Andrew Bynum’s recovery

The big man may not be ready for training camp, but that’s okay with the Cavaliers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to be extremely cautious with Andrew Bynum's recovery, and it's unclear whether the big man will be ready for training camp, according to Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer.

Cleveland signed Bynum to a two-year, $24.8 million deal in July, but only $6 million of that is guaranteed due to his injury issues. While Bynum has been working hard with the Cavs’ training staff as he continues to rehab from a pair of knee surgeries in March, the team smartly won’t rush him back to the court after everything that he has gone through.

Bynum had a series of setbacks with his knees last year, which forced him to miss the entire 2012-13 season. Whenever the 25-year-old is ready to return to the court, the Cavs want him to be as healthy as he can be to give him the best shot of staying on the court for a possible playoff run. If that means missing camp, the preseason and even some regular season games, then so be it.

If Bynum is able to stay relatively healthy and even approach his production from his days with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Cavs could make some noise in the Eastern Conference. Kyrie Irving is a budding superstar, and both Anderson Varejao and No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett are expected to be ready to go for training camp. Dion Waiters and Tristan Thompson are both solid young players, and Jarrett Jack was brought in to back up both guard spots.

With all of those pieces in place, a healthy Bynum could be the difference between a borderline playoff team and a team that one of the upper echelon East teams won’t want to face in the first round of the postseason.
