Otto Porter injury: Wizards rookie limited in training camp by hip flexor

The season hasn’t started, but the injuries keep coming for the Wizards.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

After losing Emeka Okafor and Chris Singleton to injuries earlier this week, the bad news keeps piling up for the Washington Wizards. The team announced Saturday that rookie forward Otto Porter will be limited in training camp after suffering a hip flexor injury during voluntary offseason workouts.

According to coach Randy Wittman, Porter suffered the injury while slipping during a recent pickup game. As Bullets Forever's Mike Prada says for all Wizards fans, "Is this not the exact kind of injury that only happens to this franchise? How many other teams had a guy get hurt by slipping on the court during a voluntary workout session?"

Porter, the No. 3 pick in the 2013 draft, has had a frustrating offseason. After being limited by a hamstring injury during Las Vegas Summer League, he continues to be hampered by minor ailments that have kept him off the court. The rookie said during the team’s media day that working with his new teammates has allowed him to build confidence, but the injuries are presumably stifling that progress to some degree.

Without Okafor, Singleton and Porter, the Wizards would be left with a pretty shallow frontcourt heading into the season. Right now, the Wizards have Nene, Al Harrington, Kevin Seraphin, Jan Vesely, Trevor Booker, Trevor Ariza, Martell Webster and Glen Rice Jr. to fill the three non-backcourt positions. This could allow camp invitee Josh Childress to sneak onto the roster.
