Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak announced on Tuesday that the team signed free agent forward Shawne Williams.

The former Indiana Pacers’ draftee last suited up for the Portland Trail Blazers and will solidify the Lakers’ frontcourt.

Per team policy, the terms of the contract weren't immediately made known, Williams is a six-year NBA veteran who's spent time with the New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, Dallas Mavericks and Indiana Pacers.

The Pacers selected Williams with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2006 draft, and last suited up for the Portland Trail Blazers, though he never appeared in a game. He plead guilty to marijuana charges in February 2013. Though he's been a journeyman in the NBA, he had his greatest success under Mike D'Antoni with the Knicks with his ability to stretch the floor and shoot from distance. During that season in 2010-11, he averaged career highs in minutes (20.7), points (17.1) and rebounds (3.7) per game in 64 contests.
The news also likely means that the Lakers won't pursue newly-released free agent Michael Beasley after the Phoenix Suns cut ties with him earlier in the day since the 6 ft. 9 forward will provide depth in the frontcourt.
