2013 FIBA Americas results: Dominican Republic, Argentina and Mexico advance to semifinals

The final four of the tournament has officially been set.

The second round of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship wrapped up Sunday, with the Dominican Republic, Argentina and Mexico punching their ticket to the semifinals. Let’s take a look at the action:

Dominican Republic 86, Uruguay 78 - The Dominican Republic clinched a berth in the 2014 World Cup with Sunday's win against Uruguay. Power forward Jack Martinez led a balanced attack with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the 86-78 victory that was within a possession or two for the majority of the game.

The Dominicans led by just five points with three minutes left in the game, but pulled away for the win. Point guard James Feldeine scored 14 points while Houston Rockets guard Francisco Garcia, center Eloy Vargas and swingman Eulis Baez added 13 apiece.

Former Atlanta Hawks center Esteban Batista led Uruguay with 21 points and 13 rebounds. In general, Uruguay played right with the Dominican Republic, but 11 missed free throws by Uruguay put them out of reach in the closing two minutes.

Argentina 73, Canada 67 - Indiana Pacers forward Luis Scola scored 28 points to secure Argentina's ticket to the FIBA Championships in 2014, but in doing so ended Canada's bid for the same invite.

Guard Cory Joseph led his team with 19 points, but Argentina's defense and poor shooting doomed Canada, who shot 39 percent from the floor and only 3-for-18 from 3-point range. Orlando Magic big man Andrew Nicholson added 17 points for Canada, and Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Swingman Selem Safar complemented Scola with 18 points and hit 4-of-6 3-pointers. Point guard Facundo Campazzo added 10 points and eight assists for Argentina.

Mexico 66, Puerto Rico 59 - Mexico used a 17-4 run in the fourth quarter to pull away and beat Puerto Rico, 66-59. Puerto Rico didn't play Carlos Arroyo, Renaldo Balkman and J.J. Barea because they already had a spot in the semifinals locked up.

Noe Alonzo led Mexico with 13 points. Hector Hernandez added 12 points, while Lorenzo Mata had seven points and 10 rebounds. Mexico won despite shooting just 39.4 percent from the field.

Larry Ayuso had 17 points to lead Puerto Rico, making 5-of-9 from 3-point range. John Holland and Daniel Santiago both chipped in 11 points.

Venezuela 95, Jamaica 85 - In a game that ultimately meant very little, Venezuela came out victorious over Jamaica, 95-85. Hector Romero had 23 points to lead Venezuela, while Donta Smith had 20 points.

Venezuela jumped out to a nine-point lead after one quarter, but Jamaica got back in the game and kept it close until midway through the fourth quarter. That’s when Venezuela opened up a 13-point lead and cruised to victory.

Patrick Ewing Jr. had 16 points to lead a balanced scoring effort for Jamaica. Four other players for Jamaica reached double figures, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Venezuela’s hot shooting.
