Ryan Anderson injury: Pelicans forward may not play again this season

The New Orleans big man suffered a herniated disc on Jan. 3 against the Boston Celtics.

Long-rumored to be the subject of trade talks, New Orleans Pelicans power forward Ryan Anderson may not see the court again for any team this season, according to a report from Jimmy Smith of NOLA.com. Anderson was injured when Celtics swingman Gerald Green collided with him as he went for a steal. He had to be taken from the court on a stretcher:

That's an issue for New Orleans, whose season has quickly taken a turn for the worse. The Pelicans had been battling to make up ground and fight for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Now, with Jrue Holiday injured and Eric Gordon on the trade block, it appears they could end up in the lottery yet again.

The Pelicans made big moves after signing Tyreke Evans away from the Sacramento Kings in restricted free agency on July 10. Two days later, New Orleans traded Nerlens Noel for Jrue Holiday and a first round pick during the 2013 NBA Draft, giving them a solid base to build upon next to Anthony Davis.

The team has been silent about whether or not he is slated to return, but it doesn’t look good. Anderson has been sitting on the Pelicans bench in street clothes, but no further information has been made available outside a press release from the team on Tuesday. Anderson’s injury could mean that the Pelicans will be sellers at the trade deadline.
