UPDATE, Jan. 15, 3 p.m. ET: The Boston Celtics have recalled Rajon Rondo less than two hours since assigning him to the Maine Red Claws, the team officially announced.

Rajon Rondo was assigned to the Maine Red Claws to participate in a workout and has already been recalled.

The Boston Celtics have sent Rajon Rondo to their D-league affiliate, the Maine Red Claws, for an injury rehab assignment, the team announced. Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge clarified that Rondo will not play in any games for the Red Claws, instead participating in single workout as the next step of his progress toward returning:
“Rajon is progressing terrifically in his rehab and this is the next step,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations. “This is a brief assignment so that Rajon can participate in a workout this afternoon with the Red Claws and he will be called back up to the Celtics upon the conclusion of the workout.”
Rondo has missed the first 39 games of the Celtics season after tearing his ACL last January but is expected to make his season debut soon. Multiple reports indicate Rondo is targeting a return on Friday when the Celtics host the Los Angeles Lakers, including a "cryptic" tweet from the man himself that hinted at a comeback date:
The timing is interesting, considering the Celtics just traded Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for backup point guard Toney Douglas. Boston hosts the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday before what may be Rondo's first game back.
